Special Education

VHS Special education is an organized system of instruction designed to meet the unique learning needs of students with disabilities or developmental delays. It provides individualized teaching methods, specialized materials, and necessary support services to ensure students can access the curriculum and make meaningful progress. Instead of a “one-size-fits-all” approach, special education adapts the methods, materials, environment, and pace to meet each student’s individual needs. Its purpose is to promote academic growth, independence, and full participation in school and daily life.

Key parts of VHS special education include:

  • Individualized instruction – lessons are tailored to match each student’s abilities and goals.
  • Specialized teaching strategies – using techniques that support learning, communication, behaviour, or motor skills.
  • Support services – speech therapy, occupational therapy, counselling, and other related services when needed.
  • Flexible learning environments – this may happen in a special classroom, a regular classroom with support, or a mix of both.
  • Individualized Education Program (IEP) – a plan that outlines goals, accommodations, and services for the student.

The main goal is to help every learner reach their full potential, build confidence, develop independence, and participate meaningfully in school and daily life.
